Holden Beach fishing rewards patience and a little local knowledge. Here's a season-by-season rundown.

Surf fishing

The west end of the island tends to be less crowded and productive for pompano and whiting in the warmer months. Red drum and bluefish move through in the fall.

Pier fishing

A day pass gets you access to the Holden Beach Fishing Pier — a great option for families or anyone without a boat, with a shop on-site for bait and tackle.

Inshore

The marsh and ICW behind the island hold redfish, flounder and trout nearly year-round, with spring and fall being the most consistent.

Licenses

North Carolina requires a Coastal Recreational Fishing License for anyone fishing from the beach, pier (unless the pier holds a blanket license) or a private boat — check current requirements before you go.
